Why Write a Book with Interracial Characters?
Well, I’m not quite sure how to answer that because I write books for the characters who capture my imagination. The world is a wonderful mix of people, rich in vivid history and mythology. My characters follow in those footsteps with heroes and heroines of different races, nationalities, and religions. Those are the themes I write into my books and for the most part, it’s subconscious, not a point I’m trying to make. My only goal is presenting a captivating love story!
I’m more likely to ask, why not write a multicultural/interracial book? So I’ve joined in this hop with wonderful authors who’ve delivered tantalizing, romantic tales with love, diversity, and courage at the center of each and every story.
The book I’m spotlighting is SHEPHERD, book 2 in the Phoenix Legends futurist romance series. Esme Loures Vier, code name KARMA, is a tough, young survivor and one the most brilliant weapons designers the mercenaries have ever encountered. Used by her father and then sold to a ruthless husband, she’s had little choice in her options or her future. Until she’s captured and held for execution by the Regents of New Delphi. But always a resourceful woman, Esme is just getting started!
Cyber rebellion with heart

Esme Loures Vier – CODE NAME: Karma
JOB: Widow/Wife/Traitor/Weapon’s designer
In a race against time, the Down Below underground rebel network plans for the rescue of one of their own from the Regent death squads. The success or failure of their plan hinges on the loyalty of a deadly former Regent guard and one of the most brilliant and dangerous weapon’s designers in New Delphi’s history.
Earth Date 2178 A.D. – One hundred and fifty years after genetically enhanced crops and livestock decimate the Earth with a lethal bacterial strain of Salmonella only twenty percent of the world’s population remains.
Small pockets of civilization flourish, supported by computerized technologies and vaccinations against the bacteria, the new cities built over the ruins of the previous age. Regents, the owners of the technology, govern the interests of their individual cities–shining examples of progress and advancement. The Down Below rebel network of New Delphi is here to counter the most horrific atrocities enacted in the name of progress.

A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. “Help me? Help yourself! Face what is yours to face,” Elizabeth hissed. She yanked the door open then forced it to slam behind her.
Claire stood still for a moment, feeling as if a tornado had swept through the room. Elizabeth’s demand had left her shaken. She drew a deep breath, then went to her desk and picked up her tea, noticing her trembling hands.
Turning toward the window, Claire saw a muscular orderly accompanying Elizabeth to the locked ward at the far end of the hospital compound. A flock of crows circled high overhead, seeming to follow the two receding figures. As they arrived at the outer doors of the locked unit, the orderly reached for his keys. The crows circled while the two crossed the threshold of the unit, Elizabeth suddenly pausing, turning, and looking outside, her gaze riveted on the flock of birds.
All but two flew off, disappearing into the piñon-covered hills. The two that remained came to rest on the red brick wall adjacent to the locked unit, their black eyes boring into Elizabeth. She looked panicked then enraged and, shaking a finger at the creatures, yelled something. Her frantic gestures told Claire that she was screeching curses to ward off evil.
Claire took a step back from the window, from the impact of Elizabeth’s rage.
The orderly grabbed Elizabeth roughly by the arm and pulled her inside.
The crows waited, watched, then flew away.

The fifth Brothers of Rock novel featuring Chasing Cross finds drummer Rick Saunderst living in a personal hell. For the first time ever, booze can’t mask his feelings. After over a decade of the rockstar life, Rick finally feels like he has a life off stage. Jamming in a garage with old friends and getting to know Sarah, and her loyal dog, Molly, is his definition of home.
The rest of Chasing Cross continue the tour, with help from Fallen Tuesday’s lead singer, Luke, as their replacement drummer. He brings life back to the band, but even still, without Rick, the band feels incomplete.
In the final book featuring Chasing Cross, choices will come to a head. Chasing Cross must decide whether to move on without Rick and Rick must settle his own battles, personally and professionally. Falling in love wasn’t part of the deal, but sometimes love happens when a person least expects it.
AUTHOR POST – Karolyn James:
I’m now at the point where I’m asking “what comes after the rock?” because the fifth book in the Chasing Cross books in my Brothers of Rock series is out. I had written series before but never like this one. This was the first time I was very organized, and on top of that, with the support of the readers, I was able to get the series expanded for another five books next year following another band, which allowed me to work that band into the first five books.
For those who have followed the first five Brothers of Rock books, they get to meet the next band – Fallen Tuesday – in books four and then five. I often get asked how I organized the series, or how I will organize the next set of books. I’m not an expert and everyone is different, but I’ve found it so much easier to write a series when you have a proper outline for the series. Maybe not each book, but I think it’s important to have storylines that cross between books yet there’s a storyline that’s fully told in each book. If a reader grabbed the fourth book of Chasing Cross, they’d be able to read it and understand everything. They’d hopefully be enticed to go back and start from the beginning to get the full complete story. Before I started writing Brothers of Rock, I started with the band, the names of the band, and then started plotting. The fun part of this was creating Chasing Cross as a band on top of the world… while working on the Fallen Tuesday books I chose a band that was on the rise. So the books go along with the series but it’s totally different.
I think that’s extremely crucial too… you have to make it different. Each book is a piece of a bigger puzzle but each one needs to entertain and satisfy. I have three notebooks that contain everything Brothers of Rock related.
Thank you to all the fans who have read Brothers of Rock and Chasing Cross. If you haven’t, hurry and start reading! The first Fallen Tuesday book will be released in January 2014!

After putting her life on the line to protect classified intelligence, military psychologist Mia Kensington is on a cross-country road trip from hell with an intrusive save-the-day hero. Uninterested in his white knight act, she’d rather take her chances without the ruggedly handsome, cold-blooded operative who boasts an alpha complex and too many guns.
Colby Winters, an elite member of The Titan Group, has a single objective on his black ops mission: recover a document important to national security. It was supposed to be an easy in-and-out operation. But now, by any means necessary becomes a survival mantra when he faces off with a stunning woman he can’t leave behind.
When Titan’s safe houses are compromised, Colby stashes Mia at his home, exposing his secret—he’s the adoptive father of an orphaned baby girl. Too soon, danger arrives and Mia lands in the hands of a sadistic cartel king with a taste for torture. As hours bleed into fear-drenched days, Colby races across the globe and through a firestorm of bullets to save the woman he can’t live without.
Setup- Colby Winters is running out of a cartel kingpin’s mansion during a gunfight to a waiting Titan team member.
Gunfire surrounded her. Coming for them, shooting away from them. They fired. He fired back. The burnt gunpowder floated behind him, blazing into her nose and eyes. Still, she pushed, moving as he moved, tracing his cross-hatched steps, ducking when he ducked. A shadow behind the man.
She heard a thump. He growled and missed a step but didn’t stop moving. Brilliant red blood sprayed onto her. He didn’t slow. Her legs burned keeping the pace.
They rounded the corner, and he pressed her against the stucco wall. His blood stained her. It painted the wall and covered his hands. Vehicles came their way. Armed men poured from a hole in the perimeter fence like ants from an anthill. Fireballs from the jungle hit the vehicles. Violent explosions sent deadly fireworks into the sky. Rubber and diesel burned hot. Black smoke billowed around the armed men running toward them.
The heat, humidity, and smoke would have slowed a lesser man. So would a gunshot wound. He scanned the vast lawn.
“We have to make it past that hole in the fence. There’s a vehicle waiting for us. We’ve got a sniper in the trees, and two more men on the ground. When you see someone dressed like me, you run like hell toward him. Got it?”
“You’re hurt.” She wanted to run her hands across his skin and stop the bleeding.
He ignored her. “Say it, Mia. Can you do this?”
“I can.” She gave him a strong nod, exacerbating her headache. She didn’t care. Colby was here, and she’d do whatever he needed her to do.
“You got this. Let’s go.”
He gave her a small push in the right direction. Bullets sounded around her. Men ran toward them, guns pointed their way. The shots hit the grass, spitting up dirt, and slapping her face. She tasted blood and grit, and felt the filth in her mouth, which caked her lips and teeth.
White-hot pain rocketed through her. A dizzying flash made her stumble. He grabbed her upright.
“Flesh wound. Keep going,” he shouted above the noise. His teeth were gritted together. He huddled beside her, pulling her. “There’s Jared. Run!”
Another thump. He was hit again, as he shielded her from the rain of artillery. One by one, men advanced toward them and were dropped by a sniper. But as one went down, another appeared.
She heard another bullet hit. Winters dropped to his knee, pulled Mia under him, and cursed violent threats. His sweat and blood coated her. She felt it through the layers of clothing and vests. He scooped her with one arm and crawled behind a statue.
“How bad are you hurt, Colby?”
“Doesn’t matter.” His labored breaths worsened with each passing moment.
“How bad, damn it?”
Winters stopped laboring and laughed. “You’re unreal, you know that?”
Mia glared at him.
“Bad. But I think Kevlar got most of it. Everything heals. I’m not worried. Jared’s twenty yards ahead, picking them off. We have to go for it right now. Or we don’t have a chance. You got it, babe?”
“I can do this.”
“I know you can. Run, baby, run.” He took off at a limped sprint, acting as a barrier from the fire again.
His leg went out from under him. The whiz of bullets went to slow motion, the sound ceased. Mia dropped on bent knees, watching him on the ground.
“Run, goddamn it,” he shouted. His veins popped out of his neck as he fired into the distance.
The world came back, loud and furious. Her legs moved, even though her mind was numb. Jared appeared out of nowhere. He jumped from his perch and snared her with an arm, dragging her into the vehicle.
Jared threw the vehicle into gear and spun tires as he tore down the makeshift road. Branches and jungle leaves scratched at the windshield.
Mia launched at Jared, hitting his shoulder.
“Colby’s hurt.” Tears and terror filled her throat. The very depths of her soul ached. Her screech turned to a pleading whisper. “Please. Help him.”
“They were right on your tail. They’ve got him by now.”
Dread ricocheted through her head. All the pain and loss pressed onto her. Suffocating despair ripped her apart. Tears streamed down. Rapid breaths came fast. Too fast. She tried to cut them off but failed. All went black.
